As a follow- up on the National Strategy on Hunger, Health and Nutrition, which came out of the September 2022 White House Summit, this week, the White House hosted a second summit to announce private and public sector commitments.
As part of the summit, 15 Mayors Alliance members, including our new Chairwoman, have committed to launching mayor-led task forces, local actions, or public/private partnerships in their communities this year. These mayoral commitments were highlighted by the White House here.
These communities/Mayors are Sharon Weston Broome (Baton Rouge, LA), Chair, Mayors Alliance; Abdullah Hammoud (Dearborn, MI); Jaylen Smith (Earle, AR); Joseph Carfora (East Haven, CT); Valerie Kindle (Harper Woods, MI); Frank Scott (Little Rock, AR); City of Cleveland, OH, City of Seattle, WA, City of Milwaukee, WI, Dominick Pangallo (Salem, MA), Rochelle Robinson (Douglasville, GA), Nathaniel Booker (Maywood, IL), and City of Houston, TX.
In addition to the task forces and action plans, other commitments from member mayors include Mayor Daniel Rickenmann (Columbia, SC) announcing a partnership with Instacart to increase access to fresh and nutritious groceries for families living in the city’s food deserts. Mayor Van Johnson (Savannah, GA) also committed to advancing nutrition security by identifying policies at the city and county levels related to providing equitable food access. Additionally, in New York City, under the leadership of Mayor Eric Adams, New York City Health + Hospitals will expand interdisciplinary, nutrition focused lifestyle medicine programs, and New York City Public Schools will continue its partnership with Wellness in Schools to improve student access to plant-forward offerings.
These commitments are building off the prior mayoral commitments from Mayors John Giles, Mesa, AZ, Chair Emeritus, Mayors Alliance; Ron Nirenberg, San Antonio, TX; and Paige Cognetti, Scranton, PA. Last March, these Mayors were featured in the White House fact sheet launching the White House Challenge.
