“As mayor, I believe no child should ever have to worry about their next meal. Joining the Mayors Alliance to End Childhood Hunger is an opportunity to take real action—working alongside leaders nationwide to ensure every child in our community has access to healthy, nutritious food. When we fight hunger, we build a stronger, healthier future for Mead and beyond.”
Mayor Colleen Whitlow has been actively involved with the Mead Area Food Bank for years, playing a key role in expanding its reach by working toward establishing a regional food bank to serve surrounding communities.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, she led a coalition of community leaders, including representatives from the Town of Mead, local Houses of Worship, Mead schools, Police and Fire departments, utility providers, and organizations such as the Mead Area Food Bank, the Mead Area Community Foundation, the Mead Rotary Club, and the Mead Area Chamber of Commerce. Together, they identified ways to provide critical support to residents in need. During this time, she also spearheaded the development of a website to centralize information, resources, and donation opportunities, ensuring assistance for those facing hardships. This initiative connected community members with trusted sources of information, virtual support, and essential services such as food, medication, and medical supply deliveries, creating a vital support system during the pandemic.
Additionally, the Mobile Food Bank continues to visit Mead monthly, providing ongoing food assistance to residents in need. The Town of Mead and Mead Police Department also partner with nonprofit organizations to support local food drives, ensuring resources are available during increased demand.
