Right now, Congress is threatening serious cuts to federal nutrition programs, including SNAP, WIC and school meals.
Why SNAP Matters
Programs like SNAP help nearly 14 million kids who live with hunger — ensuring children grow up healthy and equipped with the resources they need to break the cycle of poverty. But with these proposed cuts, millions of kids could lose access to the very support that helps them thrive. SNAP has been a lifeline for families experiencing economic hardship, helping ensure their kids don’t suffer in those difficult moments. Sometimes, people face unexpected crises due to losing a job or a surprise medical bill that puts their kids at risk of not having enough to eat.
The potential cuts would affect more than 17 million children who receive food assistance through SNAP. Additionally, 12 million children would be at risk of losing access to free school meals. These cuts, alongside other policy changes, could also have a harmful effect on Summer EBT — threatening access to summer meals for 31 million children.
A group of more than 100 Republican, Democratic, Non-Partisan, and Independent Mayors wrote to Congress – spearheaded by Mayor Paige Cognetti, Vice-Chair, Mayors Alliance, urging the protection of the SNAP program.
